CNC Insert Tool chip breaking

21 Jun 2024

Whether the chip breaking of the tool is reliable or not has a significant impact on normal production and operator safety. In cutting processing, broken chips will splash and

injure people, and it is easy to damage the machine tool; and long strip chips will wrap around the workpiece or tool, which is easy to scratch the workpiece, cause tool

damage, and even affect the safety of workers.

For automated processing machine tools such as CNC machine tools (machining centers), due to the large number of tools and the close connection between the tool holder

and the tool, the chip breaking problem becomes more important. As long as one of the tools is unreliable in chip breaking, it may destroy the automatic cycle of the

machine tool and even destroy the normal operation of the entire automatic line. Therefore, when designing, selecting or sharpening tools, the reliability of tool chip breaking

must be considered. For CNC machine tools (machining centers), etc., the following requirements should be met:

Chips should not be entangled on the tool, workpiece and its adjacent tools and equipment;

Chips should not splash to ensure the safety of the operator and observer;

During finishing, chips should not scratch the machined surface of the workpiece and affect the quality of the machined surface;

Ensure the predetermined durability of the tool, do not wear out prematurely and try to prevent its breakage;

When the chips flow out, they should not hinder the injection of cutting fluid;

Chips will not scratch the machine tool guide rails or other components.

On the basis of meeting the above requirements, different tools have different requirements for chip length. For example, the maximum chip length of rough turning steel is

about 100mm; fine turning should be slightly longer. Too fine chips should be avoided because they are easy to embed into some important parts of the machine tool guide

rails and tool devices (such as reference surfaces), which not only requires additional protective devices, but also brings certain difficulties to chip removal.

For some tools that are not easy to break chips, such as forming turning tools, grooving turning tools and cutting turning tools, their stable chip rolling should be guaranteed

on automated machine tools such as CNC machine tools (machining centers)
