In general machining and cutting, we use cutting fluid, which has the functions of cooling, lubricating and chip removal, which is called wet cutting. When cutting fluid is
not applied, it becomes dry cutting.
When designing dry cutting tools, it is not only necessary to select the applicable tool material and the coating used, but also to consider the mutual consideration and
optimization of the tool material, tool coating and tool geometry. Different cutting methods put forward different requirements for tool design, and dry cutting tools must
meet the following conditions:
1) The tool material should have good heat resistance and wear resistance;
2) The coefficient of friction between the chip and the tool should be as small as possible;
3) The groove shape of the tool should ensure smooth chip removal and easy heat dissipation;
4) The tool should have high strength and impact toughness.
Compared with wet processing, dry processing not only improves production efficiency and reduces production costs, but also is conducive to environmental protection.
It is an ideal and clean metal cutting processing method.
Whether it is wet cutting or dry cutting, there is no special requirement for the material of the tool. Diamond tools, tungsten steel tools, ceramic tools, etc. are all available.
