There are various threading methods and tools suitable for different parts, thread profiles and pitches. Each threading method and tool has its own advantages in specific
situations. To help you successfully perform high-productivity and high-quality threading, we offer the following suggestions and tips.
Initial considerations for threading
These initial considerations will influence the choice of threading method, threading tool, and application method.
Thread
Consider the following dimensional and quality requirements for the threads to be machined:
External thread or internal thread?
Thread profile (e.g. metric, UN)
pitch
Right-hand or left-hand thread?
Number of thread heads
Tolerance (tooth form, position)
Component
After considering the features, look at the part:
Can the workpiece be clamped safely?
Is chip evacuation or chip control a critical issue?
Does the material have good chip breaking properties?
Parts are produced in batches. Mass production threads can be produced using multi-tooth inserts or Tailor Made custom cutters optimized for maximum productivity
Single or multi-start thread
machine tool
Machine tool considerations include:
Stability, power and torque, especially for larger diameters
Cutting fluid and coolant supply
Is high-pressure coolant needed to break long-chip materials?
Number of tool stations available for the selected threading method
Speed limits, especially on bar feeders and small diameters
Clamping possibilities, is there a counter spindle or tailstock?
Are threading cycles available?
